Break the glass

A live interpreter for a counter that is not working. Not a rehearsal — somebody is in front of you now, and the phone asks for you, in the language of the place.

Decoder

A letter or a sentence you did not understand: several readings and their sources, never a verdict.

What happens to what you say

• Rehearsal speech is not recorded, and no transcript of it is kept. What you said goes with the connection.
• Records live in Zürich; model answers are composed in the EU. Nothing leaves the EU.
• Nobody else in your household can read what is yours, and everything can be deleted — with the account — from inside the app.

Boundaries

What it is not

It is easy to mistake a rehearsal for one of these. It is none of them.

• Not a language course. It is a rehearsal, and being understood matters more than being correct.

• Not a translator standing between you and somebody else — though Break the glass will interpret at a counter when a real conversation has stopped.

• Not a community, a feed, or a place where anyone else sees what you practised.

• Not an oracle about what somebody thinks of you, and never a score for belonging.

Was es nicht ist

Eine Übung lässt sich leicht mit einem davon verwechseln. Sie ist keines davon.

• Kein Sprachkurs. Es ist eine Übung, und verstanden zu werden zählt mehr als korrekt zu sein.

• Kein Übersetzer zwischen Ihnen und jemand anderem — auch wenn «Break the glass» am Schalter dolmetscht, wenn ein echtes Gespräch stehen bleibt.

• Keine Community, kein Feed, kein Ort, an dem jemand sieht, was Sie geübt haben.

• Kein Orakel darüber, was jemand über Sie denkt, und nie eine Punktzahl für Zugehörigkeit.
